Cities and townships we serve in North Oakland County

Each of these pages covers the building department, the fence rules we have confirmed, and the questions homeowners ask most. Pick the town that matches your address. If you are not sure which township or village your lot falls in, call 248-392-0244 and we will help you sort it out.

A small city sitting inside Independence Township, each with its own fence rules.

A small downtown on Davisburg Road with no council of its own, so Springfield Township’s fence limits apply, including 3 feet in the required front yard.

Acreage, lake lots, and subdivisions share one township ordinance, and fences between a lakefront home and the water must be at least 80 percent open.

The village and Orion Township handle fences differently, so the first question is which one you live in.

A zoning permit is required, and front yards and lakefront lots have tighter limits.

No residential fence permit is required in White Lake Township, except for pool fences.

Four townships meet here, so your rules depend on the township your parcel is in.

In Genesee County, where the City of Fenton and Fenton Township each have their own fence rules.

The Village of Holly and Holly Township both require fence permits, under different ordinances.

The Village of Ortonville has its own building department, separate from Brandon Township.

Fence rules change from one town to the next

Two yards in neighboring towns can follow different fence rules. In North Oakland County, a mailing address can tell you very little about which government you answer to, and each government writes its own ordinance. Here is how the rules differ across the towns on this page:

  • Clarkston has two governments. The City of the Village of Clarkston uses its own zoning, with building permits handled through the Independence Township Building Department. The city is surrounded by Independence Township, and the two are administered separately.

  • Lake Orion has a village and a township. The Village of Lake Orion requires a fence permit. Orion Township does not require a building permit for a fence, but its zoning rules still apply.

  • Union Lake is not a municipality. It sits where Commerce, Waterford, West Bloomfield, and White Lake townships meet, so there is no single Union Lake fence rule.

  • Davisburg follows Springfield Township. Davisburg is an unincorporated community, and Springfield Charter Township sets the fence rules, so ask its building department whether a permit applies.

  • Holly has permits at both levels. The Village of Holly and Holly Township each require a permit, and their front yard limits differ.

  • Fenton is in Genesee County. The City of Fenton and Fenton Township are administered separately, and each has its own fence rules.

  • Ortonville has its own village office. The Village of Ortonville has a building department, and Brandon Township has a separate planning and building department.

  • Commerce Township contains the Village of Wolverine Lake, a separate jurisdiction from the township.

  • Lakefront lots have their own limits. Commerce, White Lake, Fenton, Holly, and Springfield townships each set their own limits for fences near the water.

Your township or village building department issues any permit, and you or your contractor should confirm with that office before work starts. Anchor Fence can advise you on what the township or village requires and give you the layout and material details for your application.

Fences for North Oakland County yards

The fence you can build can depend on the town. Some limit front yards to open or low fences, and several treat lake lots separately. During the free estimate we look at your lot and match the material to what your location allows. See all residential fence options.

Solid fences for privacy

A privacy fence in vinyl or wood suits side and rear yards, where most of these towns allow the tallest fences. Vinyl needs no paint or stain. Wood can be stained to match your home.

Chain link fence at sunset

Chain link for pets and practical yards

Chain link fencing is a straightforward way to enclose a yard for a dog or kids, and privacy slats can be added later where your town allows them. Check the rules first, because some front yards do not allow chain link.

Open styles for front yards

Where the front yard must stay open or low, steel and aluminum fencing is a good fit. Aluminum does not rust. We can add matching gates and railings so the front of the house looks finished.

How we plan a fence before we dig

Every job starts with a conversation about what the fence is for, followed by a plan that fits your lot and your town. Anchor Fence sets posts in concrete deep enough for Michigan frost, which keeps gates swinging true through hard winters.

  • We call MISS DIG at least three business days before we dig, so public utility lines get marked.

  • MISS DIG does not mark private lines, such as a sprinkler system or a line to a detached garage, so tell us about those during the estimate.

  • We can advise you on local rules and give you the layout and material details for any permit application.

  • Every installation carries a two-year workmanship warranty in writing.
