Fence company serving the Village of Holly and Holly Township

Anchor Fence is a family-owned Michigan fence company with a Redford shop and a North Oakland County location. We install vinyl, wood, chain link, and steel and aluminum fences, plus gates and railings, for Holly homes. The Village of Holly sits inside Holly Township, and both governments require a fence permit under different ordinances, with different front yard limits. We can advise you on what applies, call MISS DIG before we dig, and put a two-year workmanship warranty in writing on every installation. Call 248-392-0244 or request a free quote, and we will measure your yard.

Two permits, two sets of rules in Holly

The Village of Holly is inside Holly Township, and each handles fence permits on its own. Village fences fall under the village code, and township fences fall under the township code. Whether your address is in the village or the township decides which front yard rule applies.

Ask which one you are in

Give us your street address when you call 248-392-0244. We will help you work out whether the village or the township covers it, then look at that code during your quote visit. The village or township hall can confirm.

Fences for Holly homes

The front yard is where Holly’s two sets of rules differ most, so we choose the front fence first and the back fence second. See all residential fence options.

Six feet of privacy in back

Both the village and the township allow fences up to 6 feet in side and rear yards. A privacy fence in wood or vinyl fits there. In the village, a side or rear fence cannot be forward of the front of the house or the required front yard, whichever is greater.

Ornamental fences for village front yards

In the Village of Holly, front yard fences must be ornamental and no taller than 36 inches. Approved types include post and rail, split rail, picket, and wrought iron, and others need Planning Commission approval. A short steel and aluminum fence or wood picket suits that. Welded wire is prohibited.

Open fences for township front yards

In Holly Township, a residential front yard fence is limited to 3 feet, or 4 feet if it is at least 80 percent open. That makes an open aluminum or picket fence the practical choice. Chain link is an option along the side and rear lines where the 6 foot limit applies.

Frost-ready posts and a call to 811

Winters in Holly are hard on fence posts. Anchor Fence sets posts in concrete deep enough for Michigan frost, so gates and rails stay true.

  • A MISS DIG request goes in at least 3 business days before digging so public utility lines are marked.

  • Private lines are not marked, so mention any sprinkler system or electric line to a barn or shed.

  • Wood fences in Holly should have the finished side facing out, with posts inside and no more than a 2 inch gap at the bottom. We build to that.

Village of Holly

The village requires a fence permit through Building and Code Enforcement. The village asks for a plot plan and a completed application, and recommends a boundary survey. The property owner applies, and we can advise you on the rules and give you the layout and material details.

  • Front yard: ornamental only, 36 inches maximum.

  • Side and rear yards: 6 feet maximum.

  • Place the fence on the property line or at least 6 inches inside it. The owner maintains the strip between the fence and the line.

  • No electric or barbed wire, and welded wire is prohibited.

Holly Township

The township code says anyone who wants to build a fence must first apply to the building department for a permit. Fence permit fees are set by township board resolution, so ask the building department.

  • Residential front yard: 3 feet, or 4 feet if at least 80 percent open.

  • Side and rear yards: 6 feet maximum.

  • Lakefront: between the rear of the house and the shoreline, open fences only (80 percent visible), 4 feet maximum.

  • Finished side out, with no more than a 2 inch gap at grade.

You or your contractor should confirm with the building department before work starts, because ordinances can change.
