Fence installation in Fenton, Michigan

Anchor Fence is a family-owned Michigan fence company with a Redford shop and a North Oakland County location. We install vinyl, wood, chain link, and steel and aluminum fences, plus gates and railings, for Fenton homes. Fenton is mostly in Genesee County, and the City of Fenton and Fenton Charter Township are separate governments that both require a fence permit under different rules. City or township? Fenton has both

The City of Fenton was incorporated out of Fenton Township, and the two are administratively separate. Fenton Charter Township surrounds the city. Each has its own building and zoning office, and each uses its own fence ordinance.

Confirm your county and township

Most of the City of Fenton is in Genesee County, with small portions in Oakland and Livingston counties. Tell us your street address when you call 248-392-0244, and confirm with the local building department that you are looking at the right set of rules for your parcel.

Fences for Fenton homes

In Fenton, the style you can choose depends on whether the fence is in a front yard or the back, and on whether your lot is in the city or the township. We cover that during the free estimate. See all residential fence options.

Wood privacy fence along a rear yard

Six feet along the back and sides

Both the City of Fenton and Fenton Township allow fences up to 6 feet in side and rear yards. A privacy fence in wood or vinyl works there. In the township, a solid fence can go to 6 feet, but within the actual front yard setback an opaque fence is limited to 40 inches.

Black aluminum ornamental fence along a front yard

Decorative fences in the city’s front yard

In the City of Fenton, a fence in a required front yard or an exterior side yard is limited to 3 feet, it can be no more than 49 percent solid, and it has to be decorative. A steel or aluminum fence fits. In a front yard that is not a required front yard, black vinyl coated chain link may be approved.

Chain link and open styles in the township

Fenton Township allows non-opaque fences such as chain link, picket, and wrought iron up to 6 feet. The township asks for colors of white, black, or an earth tone, with posts facing inward and the finished side out. Lake lots have a separate 30 inch limit beyond the sight line.

Footings for frost, and 811 before the first hole

Anchor Fence sets posts in concrete deep enough for Michigan frost, so a fence in Fenton keeps its line year after year.

  • MISS DIG must be notified at least 3 business days before digging, and we make the request for our installs.

  • MISS DIG marks public lines only. Share what you know about private lines, such as a sprinkler system or a line to an outbuilding.

  • In the City of Fenton, do not block driveway sightlines, and keep fences out of the public right of way. We plan the layout that way.

City of Fenton

The city requires a fence permit and publishes a Fence Permit Application packet. The Protective Inspection department handles building, zoning, and code enforcement. The property owner applies, and we can advise you on the rules and give you the layout and material details.

  • Side and rear yards: 6 feet maximum.

  • Required front yard or exterior side yard: 3 feet maximum, no more than 49 percent solid, decorative.

  • Posts and hardware face the interior.

  • No fences in the right of way.

Fenton Charter Township

The township requires a zoning permit for fences, and the application needs supporting documentation.

  • Non-opaque fences (chain link, picket, wrought iron): 6 feet maximum.

  • Opaque fences (solid wood or masonry): 6 feet maximum, and 40 inches within the actual front yard setback.

  • Lake lots: nothing over 30 inches beyond the sight line.

  • Colors: white, black, or earth tone. Posts face inward, finished side out.

You or your contractor should confirm the current rules with the building department before you build.
