A White Lake fence plan that starts with your lot lines

Because White Lake Township does not issue a permit for most residential fences, no one at the township reviews your plan before the posts go in. That puts the job of knowing where your lot lines are, and which rules apply, on you and on whoever builds the fence.

What we do before a fence goes up

We walk the fence line with you, measure it, and compare the layout with the township’s fence section so the height, location, and materials fit. A mortgage survey is a good place to start when you are not sure where the line is. If a neighbor shares the line, we suggest talking before the quote visit.

Our North Oakland County location, a short drive from White Lake Township, uses a White Lake, MI 48386 mailing address at 8280 Old White Lake Rd. Call 248-392-0244 to set up your quote visit.

Fences for White Lake homes

White Lake Township has different limits for the front yard, the side and rear yards, and lake lots, so the same house can need three different fence plans. We look at which yard you want to fence, then choose the style. See all residential fence options.

Six feet of privacy along the side and rear

On a lot that is not on the lake, the township allows fences up to 6 feet along the side and rear lot lines. That makes a 6-foot privacy fence in vinyl or wood a natural fit. The finished side must face outward, away from your own lot. Vinyl cleans up with a hose, and wood can be stained to match the trim.

Chain link fence at sunset

Chain link and picket for yards with pets

White Lake allows residential fences in chain link or in ornamental styles such as split rail, picket, vinyl, and wood. Chain link fencing is a practical choice for a dog run or a side yard. Other wire fences, barbed wire, and spikes are prohibited, so we do not quote those for homes.

Lower, open fences for the front and the shoreline

The front yard limit is 4 feet, and on a corner lot no fence over 4 feet may sit closer than the front setback line. Lakefront privacy fences are also capped at 4 feet and must stay at least 30 feet from the shoreline. A short picket or steel and aluminum fence fits those limits and keeps the view open.

Posts set for frost, and a call to 811 first

White Lake winters push on every fence. We set posts in concrete deep enough for Michigan frost, so the fence stays straight and the gates keep closing after a hard season.

  • Michigan law requires a call to 811 or an online MISS DIG request at least 3 business days before digging, and that includes fence posts.

  • We make that call for our installs so public utility lines are marked first.

  • MISS DIG does not mark private lines, such as a sprinkler system or a power line to a shed, so point those out during your estimate.

White Lake Township fence rules at a glance

The township’s building department says a residential fence permit is not required, except for pool fences. Fences still have to follow the fence section of the township’s zoning ordinance. Your township building department issues any permit, so you or your contractor should confirm with that office before you build.

  • Side and rear lot lines: 6 feet maximum on lots that are not on the lake.

  • Front yard: 4 feet maximum.

  • Lakefront lots: privacy fences 4 feet maximum, at least 30 feet from the shoreline.

  • Materials: chain link or ornamental styles. Other wire fences, barbed wire, and spikes are prohibited.

  • Corner lots: keep a 25 foot clear vision triangle at the corner.

A pool fence is the one residential fence that needs a permit

If you are adding a pool, the township requires a permit for the barrier around it. Anchor Fence can advise you on the township’s requirements and give you the layout and material details for your application, and the property owner applies.

  • The barrier must be at least 48 inches high above finished grade and enclose the whole pool.

  • Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, and they must open away from the pool.

  • The township does not accept a powered safety cover as a barrier.
